Highway Going to the Sun

We decided to head to Glacier National Park in Montana this weekend, to check out a road called "Highway Going to the Sun". It is closed from the end of September until they can get the snow cleared off of it in the Spring... Usually around mid to late June.

We drove Saturday afternoon to Whitefish Montana, and then entered Glacier Park, Sunday morning, once over the pass we entered into Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, Canada. We cross back over the boarder at a crossing that is only open June - Sept. 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, south of Pincher Creek Alberta. Once back in Canada we headed back west on highway 3 through the Crow's Nest Pass and back to BC.

The views were amazing through Glacier Park, it was very smoky due to forest fires in the US, and the photos just don't capture the moment. Scott and I are already planning a return trip to do a bunch more of the hikes available around the park.
Heading into Montana, the drive to White Fish was only about 3 hours from our place

We stopped just out side of Libby to check out the Kootenay River - there is a few water falls here that are worth the stop

The trail to the water falls, about a 15 minute walk

The Kootenay River - it is so different here compared to when it comes through the Creston Valley

Scott and Elyse on the suspension bridge - self regulated, 5 people allowed on it at a time and free!

The suspension bridge - the river is such a beautiful green here, not like the ugly brown in Creston

Sunday morning headed in to Glacier National Park's West Entrance

They have these really cool vehicles used in the park as shuttles and tours (Red Buses or Red Jammers) - they have stop points all over and the canvas tops roll back so you get a great view of the park

McDonald Creek a short stop before we head up to the pass

Elyse and I stopping for a break on one of the short hikes we did

Some of the view from the highway - you can see how much smoke was in the air

One of the glaciers in Glacier National Park

A view of where we were, the highway and McDonald Creek in the valley bottom

A Red Jammer on the Highway

A look back at where we were when we took the photo above of the Red Jammer

The visitor center at the top of Logan Pass was crazy busy and we couldn't find parking we continued on down the other side of the pass and stopped for lunch at Lunch Creek

A neat view when we stopped for lunch at Lunch Creek

No picnic tables but a small rock wall we used for our picnic lunch

It is tough looking at all the sights out the window and all the little hikes we did - time for a nap
Almost back into Alberta and Waterton Lakes National Park - Chief Mountian, along with lots of smoke
